As I've pointed out on many radio shows, it is a misconception that hearts, lungs, and other organs can be taken from people who have died. The organs of the dead are no longer useful. Those organs are taken from living, breathing people kept on life support and given paralyzing agents to prevent them from moving or protesting. Organ donors are not given anaesthesia and have dramatic physiological responses to being cut into. The cause of their death is the removal of their organs.

I have discussed on the show a number of people who were paralyzed when they heard the doctors declare them brain dead. Helpless, they heard the doctors ask for their organs but could not refuse. They were saved by their familiy's refusal to allow them to be harvested, and many have returned to full function to tell their stories.
